Lord Barrington had two stints as British secretary of war – from 1755-1761 and again from 1765 to 1778, when these documents were issued.
All orders except one are printed; some orders dated & signed in ink: Barrington.
Printed table of the price of commissions in the dragoons, "All commissions in the dragoons, and the field officers in the foot, at ten years purchase. Captains and subalterns of foot, at nine years purchase," updated cost of the commission for a Lieutenant Colonel & other officer ranks in ms.
Ms. warrant addressed to John Wiseman: directs him & other agents to hand over the accumulated balances of the money they hold on behalf of the government, insteat of retaining it.
Bound in full calf; rebacked in sheep with morocco label.
