The author is probably William Storey, an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati, who was born in Ipswich and achieved the rank of lieutenant in 1777.
"Rec'd from the town of Ipswich by the hand of John Choate one of the selectmen ... to procure men as soldiers to serve for said town of the sum of seventy five pounds LM for each of the following men, soldiers in Capt. John Burnams Company Colonel Michael Jacksons Battalion to serve ... during the war in the army of the United States of America...."
"... [T]he quota of men assign'd said town to compleat the fifteen battalions ordered by Congress to be rais'd by this state."
"The mens names are Briant McDaniels ... Patrick Dunnivan ... Dennis Whaling ... and I do certify that said men have past muster ...."
Docketed on verso: Lieut. Wm. Story [sic] / Rec'd for 3 men
