Smith was a merchant and privateer agent based in Boston during the revolutionary war.
Consisting of 708 of copies of letters in several hands; covers Smith's business matters (including the extensive discussion of the fleet of privateers & revealing the frustrating shortages in wartime Boston) and personal commentary and intelligence on the news of the war.
Correspondents include Benedict Arnold, Horatio Gates, Henry Knox, Israel Putnam, Baron von Steuben, John Sullivan and Nicholas Brown, etc.
Lacks p. 1-4; p. 5-8 & 739-740 worn away, affecting text; re-sewn with new endpapers, conserved & reinforced along inner margins, several tears repaired.
