Note
McDougall writes of his efforts to fight the "narrow minded souls" in Congress who are blocking adequate compensation for the widows and children of slain officers: "Provisions will be made for the wives & families of officers who have or may die or be slain in the service ... And I am in expectation of getting the pay of the general officers advanced 50 cents from the 1st of January 1777 ..."
