Transcript of ms. journal kept by Richard Cartwright, a New York loyalist, who served as secretary to British Col. John Butler.
Covers the account of the Battle of Newtown in western New York, August 29, 1779, a decisive victory for the American forces under Gen. John Sullivan that ended the alliance between the British and the Iroquois
At end: "Note. The writer was bare twenty years of age and was employed a military secretary to Major Butler."
Signed at end: "To C. Blackett Robinson Esq. 5 Jordan St, Toronto, from C.E. Cartwright, Chaplain ..." (Robinson was a Toronto publisher; C.E. Cartwright was a grandson of the author).
Docketed: "To be preserved. Received May 21, 1884."
Ruled in blue lines with original metal clasp.
