Unfinished engraved map printed during the revolutionary war, focusing on the complex waterway connecting Manhattan and Long Island Sound.
Chart's incompleteness was due to the outbreak of the American Revolution that curtailed the efforts of Major Samuel Holland to chart the American northeast. Holland returned to England in 1775 and this map was created two years later from the surveys.
Hell Gate is the narrow water passage between Ward's Island in the East River and Astoria in Queens: named for its perilous waters caused by strong tidal currents.
