De Kalb joined the Continental Army in 1777, and was killed at the Battle of Camden. His heirs' petitions to Congress for remuneration stretch from the 1820s to the 1850s.
Ms. notes at end: "The national intelligencer reports this bill as having passed. It was rejected by the Senate July 6."
