Note
Letters written by various British officers (signed by RN Captains Sir George Collier [no. 1], Sir James Wallace [no. 2] & naval official Sir Harry Parker [nos. 3-5]) to Paterson’s uncle and guardian, Charles William Tonyn, and discuss the young midshipman’s prospects and best courses of action to succeed in the navy; all red wax sealed & docketed.
With [no. 6] a partially printed commission warrant on vellum signed by Admiralty officials, John Buller, Henry Penton, Robert Man (as Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty) & Php Stenphens (as First Secretary): appointing "Lieut. Charles Willm. Patterson [sic]" as "First Lieutenant of His Majesty's ship the Ardent," 18th June 1779; red wax seal under paper, embossed with the Admiralty anchor at top left hand corner; 2 blue stamps with two blue stamps ("II Shillings VI Pence").
Paterson served in the British navy during the revolutionary war.
