Newman, captain of a American commercial vessel, writes of his capture by the British sloop Otter to his merchant employer: "Sir these are to inform you of my unhappy misfortune on the 30 of Jany being near ye cape of Virginia… coming on thick wether we thought proper to run into ye Bay and unhaply fel in with a sloop…within musquit shot before we saw her it being thick of fogg and rain… ware obliged to serender to them they have tacken from me all the money and every thing I had… I have got my liberty and am coming home by land Sir plese [sic] to inform my wife that I am well…."
