Maps no. 34-39 are believed to never have been engraved as they are wanting in all known copies. Three leaves, numbered 45*, 46* and 47*, follow plates 45, 46 and 47 respectively.
Colles surveyed the routes using a perambulator of his own invention, which measured mileage by adding up the revolutions of a wheel trailed behind a carriage. By this method he created the earliest American road guide of accuracy.
Includes document the roads, places and residences along the routes from New York City to Stratford, to Poughkeepsie and to Danbury, Connecticut at the time of the revolutionary war and immediately after.
Issued unbound, in a portfolio of paper-covered boards.
Library copy has first 17 maps only of this series; bound in a portfolio with string ties, onto which the original broadside prospectus ("Proposals for publishing A survey of the roads of the United States of America") for publishing the work is pasted.
In modern blue morocco box.
