Regrets troubling "Your Lordship, but I have been so strongly sollicited by an old friend ... to apply to Your Excellency for leave for him to see his chaplainship[.] It is Doctor Gough, who I beleive [sic] has the honor to be known to your Lordship; he is chaplain to the eigth [sic] Regiment of Horse Dragoons.... He is at present in great distress, & as he cannot attend the regiment receives but little benefit from it."
iAccording to the British Army lists for both 1770 and 1771, Maurice Gough was the Chaplain in the 9th Regiment of Horse Dragoons, commanded by Col. Henry Whitley. The chaplain for the 8th regiment was Stephen Lushington; his commander was Col. John Severs.
The Secretary at War in 1770 was Viscount Barrington, who may have been the recipient of Rochford's request.
