All concern internal decoration of Anderson House.
No. [1], Marienbad, Austria, Sept. 10, 1908 mentions his desire to include "likenesses of Mrs. Anderson, or my mother, and sister, into the frescoes."
No. [2] requests specific locations for the obverse and reverse of the Society's Eagle. Includes 4 p. on 2 leaves of explanation with 2 diagrams of the entrance lobby (now the choir stall room)
No. [3]: Memorandum with drawings for "Stall entrance hall" and map room
No. [4]: Memorandum, signed in pencil, mentions emblems of the Navy "as so many of Mrs. Anderson's family have been in the Nary - and with this the legend "Perkins." Also, if any state coats of arms work in they should be of Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, as the states with which families have been associated." For the ceiling of the Key Room he suggests "an Apotheosis of the Spirit of the Cincinnati...." The ceiling was, according to Mrs. Mowbray's journal, decorated after the completion of the walls.
No. [5]: Memorandum, April III "Most important" order for various designs of medals and initials to be incorporated in various designs
No. [6] April 3, from 2118 Massachusetts Avenue, signed: "Your beautiful frescoes are ever a delight, not only to ourselves, but to our guests ...."
No. [7], Friday: Specifies location of the letter "A" and other initials; also includes drawings for the Black Horse flag, the Eastern Yacht Club flag, and the New York Yacht Club flag for the billiard room
No. [8],April 14: Invites Mowbray to Anderson House to "look over the landscape for the Map Room, and to talk over things generally."
No. [9] April 28: Mentions arrangements for payment to Mowbray "as they come due." Also encloses a memorandum with regard to details that he wants "worked into the decorations...." He offers to send a map with a suggested route to Anderson House via Great Falls "which is so lovely along the Potomac River." This refers to the map now located at the end of the Winter Garden, then called the Smoking Room.
No. [10], June 1st: "I enclose a copy of our private signal - a Black Horse on a Red field, and also a copy of the College Club of which I make most - the Bull and A D C are the letters associated with it." He also mentions other college medals and decorations.
No. [11], November 5th, [1910] just back from a trip through the Phillppines with the Secretary of War, grants Mowbray permission to mention "anything about the Key Room frescoes in any article you desire, and I enclose a permit...." The frescoes had been completed in 1909. Anderson's trip to Japan and the Philippines with Secretary Dickinson took place in July and August, 1910. -- cf. No. [12], Dec. 6th, Weld: Concerns electric lighting for the frescoes and includes a drawing. For wiring, he suggests Brooks, who "are as good as any for bringing through the wires. But all so careless that they need close supervision...."
No. [13] Friday, Weld: "I enclose the Exeter and Harvard shields - both are red.
Letters date between Anderson's initial contact with Mowbray in 1908 and 1909, when most of the murals were completed. An entry in Mrs. Mowbray's journal dated 27 May 1908 refers to water color skethes of "Chariot of the Republic" and others saying that there was "enough work for the next two years."
Letters arranged according to location inasmuch as they could not be arranged chronologically.
Larz Anderson was a member of the Virginia Society of the Cincinnati.
