"Art de fortifier les places par Vauban, ce livre est manuscript. Et planches dessineés et lavée très prominent par Louis François Pascal de Jeandau dessinateur et mathematicien" (v. 1, front free endpaper); "Art et traité des fortification. Seconde partie de l'attaque et de la défence des places, ou l'on explique tout ce qui s'est passé et pratiqué de nouveau dans les sieges ..." (v. 2, front free endpaper).
Vauban's work circulated only in manuscript form & because Vauban did not publish his work during his lifetime, there exist numerous illustrated ms. texts based on his work. This work is one of the most extensive ones, including watercolor folding plates and ms. text of the writings of Vauban and comparisons of his ideas on fortifications with other military systems.
Initially commissioned from Vauban by Louis XIV to educate his child, the Duke of Bourgogne; in 1737 Piere de Hondt received authorisation by the King to print it, until that moment confidential material for military strategy reasons.
Ms. watercolormap on loose leaf inserted in [v. 2]: "Plan des bataille beÿ Chozim ...1769" (describing the battle lines by the Castle of Chozim in Moldavia in 1769 during the Russo-Turkish War) stored separately (MSS L2014S4)

Bound in 19th century full morocco with gilt decorative borders on covers; gilt spine divided in compartments with raised bands; marbled endpapers.
