"I am unexpectedly obliged to make a journey to Philadelphia, but I shall return next week. I thought it proper to apprize you of this."|On verso: From Col. Pickering Feby 11 ... informing of his journey to Phil. & a copy of this letter to Gov.r Clinton respecting Udny Hay [deputy quartermaster general]|In the pre-treaty months of the American Revolution, much of the Continental Army was camped at Newburg. This letter preceeds the contorversial Newburgh addresses by about one month.|Pickering was an original member of the Pennsylvania Society of the Cincinnati; Fish, of the New York State Society.
