Item 1 is an unsigned draft of a [2] p. letter to an unidentified person probably an officer of the New York Historical Society, 7 September 1864: "The object in troubling you now ... is to call your attention to the grave of Cresap. I found it in Trinity Church Yard in 1860, and on revisiting it in June I discovered that the headstone is broken near the ground and may soon tumble to pieces.... I believe your Hist. Soc. lately refitted Brandford's tomb. Would it not be proper for us to 'do likewise with Cresap'? Our Society will unite with yours."
Item 2, Nov. 4, 1864 addressed to Rev. & Dear Sir, possibly to the same person as was item 1: "I laid before it [the Maryland Historical Society] my proposition in regard to Capt Michael Cresap's grave and tombstone and read your kind letter offering any aid in your power."
Item 2 also includes a drawing of the proposed tombstone.
Mayer was the founder of the Maryland Historical Society in 1844 and was the author of Tah-gah-jute, or Logan and Captain Michael Cresap.
