Contains references to the Italian army; to Robspierre; the insurrection of Prairal against the policies of the Thermidorian Convention; Bonaparte and Waterloo; his trips to Belgium, Rome, and Turin.
Barras' memoirs, which he had left in the hands of his literary executor, were published in 1895; it is not clear whether the present manuscript was part of the memoirs. -- cf. Encyclopedia Britannica, 14th ed., vol. 3 p. 139. The bookseller's description in the library's case file notes that the text on leaves [12]-[15] does not exactly conform to Barras' "La Proclamation de Barras a Ses Concitoyens", printed in 1819.
Barras was the nephew of Louis Jacques Melchior Saint-Laurent, comte de Barras, who had served with the French fleet at Newport and Yorktown. The younger Barras saw service with the French military in the East Indies with Admiral Suffren.
