Docketed on verso: Copy of M Greenleafs application for discharge from army, Oct. 13, 1780
Greenleaf requests that Tupper, his commanding officer of the 11th Massachusetts, "to use your influence with his Excellency to procure me a resignation of my commission in the Continental Army ... I have most cheerfully offered more than five years of the bloom of my life a sacrifice for my country, and ask as a compensation, an honourable resignation, if my past conduct has intituled [sic] me to such."
Attached at bottom is Tupper's recommendation addressed to Col. [Robert Hanson] Harrison: "I can by no means consistent with a good conscience certifgy that so good an officer as Capt. Greenleafs leaving the service will be no damage to the Regt, only from the reasons above assign'd induces me to desire you to request his Excellency to grant him a discharge."
Lt. Col. Harrison was General Washington's secretary in 1780 and would have passed along Tupper's recommmendation to "his Excellency."
Tupper was an original member of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati; Greenleaf and Harrison were both eligible but did not join.
