Captain Covell was a New York Loyalist, who was imprisoned early in the war and later joined General Burgoyne’s forces. His property in Albany was confiscated and sold.
Covell describes his efforts to reclaim his property after the war. "I find the spirit of people in general cool toward men of my description, yet, there remains sufficient of the more violent to render my situation unsafe were I to be public ..." He reports that the citizens of New York State are blaming a recently wheat blight on the "jarmin [German] troops" that brought an insect with them when they came to fight with the British during the war.
Holes on p. [3] affecting text.
Red wax seal.
