Omission of p. 1-18 explained in the preface, probably written by Hanway: "It may be observed, that this excellent little tract, "unity and public spirit," begins at page 18: the reason is that the preceding pages are on the subject of party contests, not thought proper for the study of such young men ..."
Jonas Hanway was a philanthropist and founder of the Marine Society.
Bound in calf; richly gilt spine divided in 6 compartments by raised bands & various devices including anchor & initials "D.W."; red morocco label; device with lion & motto "Never Despair" on front cover; remnants of wax seals on front & back pastedowns.
With: The polite preceptor ..., 1779.
