Pattern book for army tailors provided the acutal-size models for lapels, collars and cuffs for all ranks of the Bavarian army, each indicating a specific rank; these sheets were to be cut out, placed over the fabric.
This books reflects the major reforms instituted by Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, who joined the staff of Carl Theodore Prince Elector of Bavaria as an aide-de-camp in 1785. Thompson was born in Massachusetts and served as a lieutenant-colonel in the Loyalist forces during the revolutionary war. Among his reforms of the Bavarian army was to bring efficiency to the production and distribution of uniforms by simplifying and standardizing the patterns and setting up workhouses of the local poor to make them.
Bound in blue silk over paper boards; silver gilt ribbon borders with central crowned cipher of Carl Theodore Elector of Bavaria on both covers.
