Lawton, a Continental Army soldier from Rhode Island, was arrested and imprisoned on the charge of conspiring with the British in 1777. This petition explains his version of the events & claims his innocence: "... So consider your honnors that I did not want to hurt my country I let them alone … and the reason I did not tell of it mite please your Honnors was because I intended to go in the service ..."
