Henry Knox writes from West Point to Massachusetts Governor John Hancock requesting assistance for Captain John Slewman, who was permanently disabled after being severely wounded at the Battle of Germantown in 1777. Knox urges relief for the veteran, arguing that neglect of officers who sacrificed for American independence would diminish the honor and reputation of the Revolution.

Written in the hand of Henry Knox's aide-de-camp, Samuel Shaw, and signed by Henry Knox.
Captain Slewman remained in service until the end of the war and in 1784, he finally received a half-pay disability pension with an annual stipend of $300 from the State of Massachusetts.
