Note
Wood has received Joe's letter, but has not "had an opportunity of sending the contents to Head Quarters" so can "give you no answer to it at present.... I should have made the application to His Excellency ..., but apon my arrival at camp I found that you were ordered to the southward, and my not having hearing from you respecting your destination, I did not think it proper to say anything about it. You may count upon every act of friendship in the compass of my powers, and that I will communicate His Excellency's sentiments as soon as I receive them."
Wood commanded the 8th Virginia regiment of the Continental Army during the revolution and was an original member of the Virginia Society of the Cincinnati.
See also MSS L1977.104.2 for another letter from Wood to "Joe."
