Satirizes the British efforts to expand their armed forces to prepare to defend the homeland against the threat of invasion from France in 1779-1780.
Three military recruits are being examined by a young officer on the road in front of "The Old Fortune [of War]" tavern. The recruits are of diverse ages and characters. A bystander grins at them, and a young woman sits beside a basket of goods in the right foreground.
