Northrup was Town Clerk for New Milford as of Oct. 1, 1832.
Commonplace book begins with "Extracts from Mr. Griswold's Century Sermon", a sermon that Northrop may have heard or read; it was published in 1801. It includes an extensive 18th-century history of the town of New Milford, its earliest settlers, religious institutions, town officials, military field officers, a troop of horse, bridges, schools, etc. At the end of the excerpts: Copied from Record in 1834 by Joel W. Northrop. The sermon comprises most of the book.
Also includes "A list of ... those persons who have represented the town of New Milford in the General Assembly of this state."
Many blank leaves before final entry: "Super fine salad" with shredded cabbage, pineapples & marshmellows [sic]."
