"We have been alarmed several times this summer with ships of war & tenders in sight & distressed with fears least they should land. But they have never landed yet but once came so night [i.e. nigh] shore as to exchange shot with our people....
"We have a company of soldiers stationed here as a guard & begin to feel a little safer."
I am very glad to hear that you keep so good guards & are so well fortifyd: I wish we may soon see the time when such war like preparations will be no more needed."
