John Russell Bartlett, the author and artist, would have been only 23 at the time of this letter, but he was living in New York and working as a bookseller; it is probable that he is the intended recipient.
Lewis responds to an unspecified request from Bartlett, but "had I sufficient confidence in the reminiscences of an old man ... as to facts which took place during his infancy ... which he could have received from tradition alone," refers him to a "biographic scetch [sic] of Francis Lewis ... edited ... by Mr. Rawle of Phi[ladelphia]. I cannot refer to the particular vol. as my copy was destroyed by a fire which consumed my buildings with all their contents about six years since."
Possibly Lewis' memory had failed him here as well; he may have been referring to a sketch of Francis Lewis by Robert Waln in Sanderson's Biographies of Signers to the Declaration of Independence (1825), a nine-volume set.
