"...[C]ircumstances ... will not admit of my permitting M. Barbé to come within the lines. In every other respect I shall be happy to forward your intentions, and if you will name any person in New York, in whom you can place a confidence to act as your Agent for the different purposes, I shal give him every facility in my power to execute them ...."
"As this whole business is purely belonging to the Marine, the Admiral [Howe] has assured me he will take care that whatever you send in for the prisoners, shall be distributed as you shall direct."
La Luzerne was an original member of the French Society of the Cincinnati.
