Note
Concerns Lafayette's 1824 tour of America. The Society of the Cincinnati at their meeting "resolved that on the arrival [of Lafayette] ... the President [i.e., Howard] request the attendance of the absent members ... throughout the State to unite in paying the contemplated honours" to Lafayette.
"As probably we shall have but a very short notice of the time of the General's arrival here, we shall not be able to give you information thereof by letter, and therefore conceive you had better depend on the newspapers for the General's movements."
Howard, Watkins, and Lafayette were all original members of the Society of the Cincinnati.
Includes unfolded address leaf, postmarked Sep 4
