Author from p. [1], paragraph [3]: I, J K Smith ...
Dated from p. [3]: "The beloved Bible in which this is deposited was my companion from my first entering the army to my return home. I am now in my 78th year."
Apparently 2 l flyleaves extracted from a family Bible: "The above was writen [sic] in this Bible when I returned home to Boston my place of nativity A.D. 1784" [2nd paragraph]

... [I]n the year 1775 June 12th inlisted a private soldier in Capt Trescet's [i.e. Lemuel Terscott's?] Copy. Colo [Asa] Titcomb's Regt at Cambridge, was not on Bunker Hill, ... but cover'd the retreat of the troops. Some of the party I was in killed by shot...."
"1777 at Ticonderoga previous to this promoted to a Lt and Adjt."
..."[S]tationd at Pikeskill untill Ticonderoga was taken ... then marched and joined the retreating army at Saratigo [sic] , on the same groundthat Burgoines army surrenderd (was in that action)
Moved to Albany - soon orderd to the Jerseys joined Genl Green[e] - Crossed the Delaware - joind Genl Washington took winter quarters at Valley Forge.... Previous to this was appointed a Capt & Brigade Majr owing to absence of my field officer that day Colo Sheperd who cammanded the Brigade gave me the command of the Regt amidst the action."
"Soon after ordered to Rode Island ... nextly to New York State and Jersey. Had a Compy of light Infantry under Lafayette - (on Rode Island under Genl Sullivan)."
In 1783 the army disbanded - Feb 7 1784 left the army - served eight years and seven months...."
"The above is a brief sceth [sketch?] of my souldiers life ...."
Smith was an original member of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati
