Title
A.L. from [Benjamin and Elizabeth Lodge?], Jacobs Swamp, Nov. 18th, 1792 : to Colonel John Carnahan near Bards Town, Kentucky
Published
Jacobs Swamp [Westmoreland Co., Pa.] 1792
Description
[4] p. ; 34 cm. (fol.)
Call Number
MSS L1974.123.2
Note
The donor of the manuscript believed the authors to be Benjamin and Elizabeth Lodge, and indeed their names appear at the bottom of the page. Further, written four lines from the bottom of the page: Betsey joins with me in our most sincere love [some text missing] mommy Billy, Johnny, Adam, Polly and Children ....
Col. John Carnahan was the father of Elizabeth Lodge. William, John, Adam and Margaret were also names of Carnahan's children. Another son, James, may be the author of this letter; his wife's name, however, was Hannah -- see John D. Kilbourne. Virtutis praemium, p. 319.
Family records show, however, that Elizabeth died in January of 1792, months before the November date of this letter, and Benjamin remarried in March, 1793. The handwriting differs from that of the other Benjamin Lodge letter in the collection (MSS L1974.123.1).
Contains family news: the birth of a son James and progress of daughters: "Jinny can spell in three sillables" and "Nelly begins to write."
The Carnahans and the Lodge family all lived for a time in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania; later Col. Carnahan and his sons John and Adam apparently removed to Kentucky, for their names appear on the tax rolls of Hardin Co., Kentucky beginning in 1793.
Mentions a 50 pound note owing to Carnahan.
Both Benjamin Lodge and James Carnahan were original members of the Pennsylvania Society of the Cincinnati.
Pages [1] and [2] are torn away, affecting text on p. [1]. Pages [2] and [3] are blankl; page [4] is address leaf.
