Signed: J Mallom; countersigned, Paulus-hook the 13th April 1777, John Campbell, Lt Colo 57th Reg.; Mallom signed 2nd time after receiving the funds from John Grant, paymaster in the Royal Engineer's Dept.
Early in the war the Continental Army had erected a fort at Paulus Hook to guard against British incursions across the Hudson River. The British captured the fort in October 1776 & spent several months demolishing it & constructing their own. On August 1779, American forces under General Henry Lee stormed the fort during the Battle of Paulus Hook.
