Note
"I shall now only say a word or two respecting the Cincinnati."
Referring to George Washington's call for a general meeting of the Society of the Cincinnati to be held in Philadelphia on 1 May 1784 to consider the organization's future, Knox urges Greene to attend, especailly given the rising opposition to the Society: "You have seen the report of the committee of the Legislature of this state, but the wrath and indignation of therespectable public are upon a much higher key.".
Knox mentions also the "thundering denunciation of wrath from your friend the Governor of South Carolina [Benjamin Guerard]."
"Our friend the Marquis de Lafayette, in his zeal of love, has rendered the order too effulgent in France .... He with some formalities obtained the permission of the King & his ministers that the officers who had served in the American Army and those under Count de Rochambeau might wear the illustrious order of the bald eagle. This will operate against the Society in America, prejudiced as the people are against us."
Closes by mentioning a letter from Washington specifically mentioning his hope that Greene will attend the Philadelphia meeting. -- See also Washington's previous letter to Greene on the same subject, MSS L1975.70.16 M
