Undated, unsigned manuscript formula for paregoric elixir, a common 18th-century medicine used for pain relief and treating coughs and breathing disorders, especially whooping cough in children.
Manuscript paper and ink appears to be 18th-century with later ms. corrections, also appearing to be 18th or early 19th-century in origin.
Paregoric elixir is included on p.10 of the 1778 Lititz Pharmacopoiea (see L2007F13 1778 M) and regimental medicine chests issued during the Revolutionary War included paregoric elixir.
