Smith requests Dayton to sen him "copies of the letters I wrote you last winter, or ... it may be more useful to me to have the originals."
"[James] Wilkinson will fight the Don if he cannot persuade him to retire beyond the Sabine."
Probably concerns Wilkinson-Burr duplicitous efforts in Louisiana, Texas, and Mexico earlier in 1806 -- see A. Linklater's An Artist in Treason: The extraordinary double life of General James Wilkinson ..., 2009.
Smith, writing as a U.S. senator, was president pro tem of the Senate in 1806. Dayton, who had recently resigned from the Senate, was a friend and confidant of both Aaron Burr and James Wilkinson.
Smith was an original member of the Maryland Society of the Cincinnati; Dayton, of the New Jersey Society.
