"The foregoing [i.e., clipping pasted at upper right, p. [1]] is from Claypoles paper of 5th crrt. & enclosed letter [not present] is from Major [Richard?] Cox." The clipping announces the government's intent to sell lands for non-payment of taxes. Bloomfield had purchased the lands, speculating that they would provide future income.
"In April 1790, Col [Oliver] Spencer engaged to pay attention to my land in the Nor. West Territory, & received the original land warrant & eight dollars, for which you procured his receipt. Afterwards, I remitted him sixteen dollrs. through the hands of Capt. Ogden to pay surveyers, registering &c, yet I have not had a line of informationrespecting the land from Col. Spencer .... I will not trouble him if I can through ... your agent ... have the taxes paid...."
Bloomfield, Dayton, Cox, Ogden, and Spencer were all original members of the New Jersey Society of the Cincinnati.
