Duranty family correspondence, Marseille, Toulon, Paris & Versailles, during the revolutionary war.
The family was in charge of running the military hospitals in Toulon, Marseille, Brest and Corsica; this correspondence includes the latest war news, discussion of troop movements in America.
In a letter of December 6, 1778, Duranty de St. Marc writes to his brother that" ... it is said the Comte d’Estaing missed his shot and is stuck in Boston where he is not at ease. Help is being sent, but there is concern that it will not happen in time." (translation from French); March 6, 1780 he reports on the departure of 10,000 troops on 12 ships of the line bound for Boston.

Historical Data
Claude-François de Duranty belonged to the Durandy family of Guillaumes in the diocese of Glandèves, a prominent lineage documented from the fifteenth century. He was the son of André Durandy (1679–1738), artillery guard and mayor, and part of a family whose members adopted the name “Duranty.” His elder brother, Jean-Étienne de Duranty (1706–1761), established himself in Montpellier as a contractor for military hospitals and, through marriage, acquired a councillorship in the Parlement of Montpellier, while another brother, Jean-Baptiste Duranty, was a canon of Embrun Cathedral. A related line through Victor Duranty (1709–1776) included Michel-François Duranty de La Rivière (1750–1789), director of the Royal Naval Hospital in Marseille, whose descendants remained active in Marseille, including François Duranty (1780–1860) and his daughter Adèle Duranty (1799–1854).
