"Gentlemen / Please to deliver the bearer your order on the Treasurer for the ballance found due to us for servfice as above [signed in two colums by by 19 officers]. Apparently addressed to the Pay Table Committee of the state of Connecticut.
Officers in the 1st Connecticut: Sm. Richards Capt (crossed through), Enoch Read Capt, Rich'd Douglass Capt (lined through), Simeon Avery Lieut, Reuben Sanderson Lieut, Benjm Throop Major, Abner Cole Ensn, Joseph Clark Ensign, Thos Anderson Lieut & QMaster, David Dorrance, Capt. David Smith Witness.
Officers in the 8th Connecticut regiment: Saml Comstock Capt., Saml Sanford Capt, Asahel Dodge Captn, Joshua Whitney Lieut., Ephraim Kimberly Lieut, Aron Benjamin, Lt. & Adjt., Samuel Hait, Ensn., Salmon Hubbel Lieut., plus one more illegible name, crossed through.
All but two,or possibly three of the officers mentioned were original members of the Connecticut Society of the Cincinnati. The two who did not become members but were eligible were Enoch Read (or Reed) and Benjamin Throop. In question is Samuel Hait; Metcalf lists 2 by that name, both from Connecticut. If, indeed, there were two of that name, he was an oritinal member; the other was eligible.
