Howard sends Smith the Society diplomas to sign for G[eorge] W[ashington] Lafayette and General [Charles] d'Aurier. Howard says that perhaps they should not send Lafayette's until he requests it as there may be opposition from those in France that could affect his son due to an earlier decree of Bonaparte forbidding the acceptance of titles from foreign governments.
Howard recommends against holding a meeting of the General Society as there has not been one for many years saying "nor do I believe that there will ever be another meeting. It will therefore be best to let it quietly sink... Some of the state societies may continue to exist... but I do not perceive any object to be obtained in endeavouring to keep up the General Society."
Modern (likely early 20th century) manuscript notes in pencil at bottom denote that Howard was President of the Maryland Society, Smith was Vice President and Maj Wm Bedford Barney was Secretary.
Notes also give background on the General Meeting that was held in 1825 and only attended by the Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey societies. Also lists the involvement of the Maryland Society in later General Society meetings through 1914. Notes appear to date from the early 20th century.
