"[I]f it is not such as the state of the weather or other obvious cause of inexpediency may have rendered improper to keep, you are to repair to either of the several places of rendezvous indicated by the signal flags as underwritten...."
"Not finding the fleet at any such stated rendezvous in England, you are immediately to acquaint the Secretary of the Admiralty with your arrival, by express, and to wait there for further orders."
"... it is essential ... that the movements of the fleet should always be as little known as possible...."
"Rendezvous denoted by the numbers as undermentioned, corresponding to the order in which they are successively pklaced: No. 1 [Blank]; 2 Spithead 3. Torbay 4 Messagivy Bay No. 5 The sealed rendezvous so marked not to be opend but in case of separation ..."
"A flag checquere blue & yellow will be hoisted ... significant of this special purpose...."
Context: In 1790, a dispute between Great Britain and Spain arose of Nootka Sound on the Pacific Coast of North America. Admiral Howe was offered and accepted command of the Channel Fleet. The dispute ended the same year.
