Edward Crawford, Jr. wrote during the revolutionary war while a first lieutenant of the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment posted at West Point to his brother Lt. John Crawford of Watt’s Pennsylvania Battalion of the Flying Camp, who was taken prisoner at Fort Washington in December 1776 and held until December 1780. The younger Edward Crawford brings news of their family to his imprisoned brother and in each letter thanks him for luxury goods – silver buttons with ivory buttons, and white broad cloth breeches and jacket that John Crawford seems to have sent him.
