Detailing the difficulities in raising Scottish regiments during the revolutionary war.
Concerns recruiting for Scottish regiments on behalf of Captain (later Lieutenant-General) Thomas Maitland. Their drummer had been recruited away by another regiment: "We could find some other hand to beat [but] we cannot get another drum," and he asks Lauderdale whether he can procure "some second-hand" drum. He asks if the recruits should be enlisted "for three years or during the American war."
