Later copy on lined paper of a friendly letter with general life lessons; in an unidentified hand.
Use your "best endeavors to receive the favorable attention of ladies of rank, taste, fashion, & talent" .... "I am delighted with the account ... of the success of the temperance cause, and the universal hostility to the life-destroying King Alcohol."
This version has printer's marks indicating paragraph breaks, type size notations, etc.
"When the Indians grow old and unfit for further service in war, they become teachers and lecture their younger brethren."
Popham was an original member of the New York State Society of the Cincinnati, to which Evans had been elected. Apparently Evans had written to Popham, a friend of his grandfather, General Anthony Walton White, seeking counsel.
Mentions General van Rensselaer and his lady. In the original version, he is replaced by General Schoonhoven.
On verso: copy of Capt. Wm Popham's lecture to Mr. Evans Feb. 9/42
Also on verso, in a different hand, biographical record of Popham's service to the New York Society and to the General Society: Elected Vice President - July 4/42 President July 4/44 / President General May 1844
