Acknowledges receipt of a [Ralph Earl?] portait of North, now in Steuben's library. North, who is addressed as "Billy, BIlly" on p. [1], had been aide-de-camp to von Steuben, and a close friend and advisor throughout the rest of Steuben's life.
Mentions the 4th-of -July celebration: the sound of bells, a few cannon shots, a great procession of magistrates and different corps of the town... On the other hand, the Cincinnati committed every sort of extravagance, a great ceremony for ... new members, music, cannon shots, and a dinner for one hundred. The results of the election of the Society's officers are also detailed.
Mentions "pouvre Clairson [i.e. Mathew Clarkson], an original member of the New York State Society of the Cincinnati, who had just lost his wife the day after the birth of their daughter on July 2nd. Mary Rutherford Clarkson died on July 3rd. "Luis et les Raderford [Rutherfords] son bien afflige."
Mentions the premature death of our friend General Green[e]. "Tot le monde le regrette et moi plus que tout le monde."
Describes his reception in Philadephia: A battalion two dragoon squads and an artillery squad with two infantry troops were in arms and asked to have me review them; a detachment of cavalry came to get me.... Gen. Muhlenberg & several distinguished officers were at my side.... They were uniformly and better dressed (excuse the remark) than your poor Continental Army. I had to promise to give them a copy of Regulations [i.e., his Regulations for the order and discipline of the troops?] and I have complied.
Mentions a rumor that their mutual friend and former comrade Hamtramck had been killed by Indians.
