Written nine days after his force's defeat at Camden, General Gates writes concerning the issuance to the Continental cavalry of "longer & better swords, than those they formerly had ... order those in store of this inferior sort, to be delivered to Col. Long D.Q[uarter] M[aster] G[eneral] to be appropriated to the use of a Corps of Horse draughted from the Militia."
