Note
The Emery's son Sheldon had died in 1891, and Nicholas Longworth Anderson, Larz's father, died in September, 1892. Larz served in the diplomatic corps in London between 1892 and 1894. This letter probably dates from the fall of 1892. "The news has just come to me..."
Although the case file suggests that the addresses are Mr. and Mrs. William H. Emory, they are Mary Hopkins Emery and Thomas J. Emery, Cincinnati friends of the Andersons. W.H. Emory had died before Larz had been posted to London.
On mourning stationery; mentioning his own loss: "My own sorrow, so recent, so unmitigated, and your sympathy, dear Mrs. Emory, so constant and tender ... brings me very near to you...." (966.1)
"I feel that to you too, my dear Emory, I must write to tell how inexpressibly deep my grief is that your beautiful boy is dead: that splendid, manly little fellow."
Watermark: Joynson Superfine
