Note
Weedon, as president of the Virginia Society, had received a copy of a circular letter from the New York State Society of the Cincinnati suggesting that The Virginia Society instruct its delegates to the upcoming meeting of the General Society with regard to distribution of members' diplomas.
"The diplomas "are now arrived with Captain Barrett and are in this place, their dates are left blank, to be fill'd up as may be agreid [sic] on by the committee. It appears to me that their dates ought to correspond, but whether it should be taken from the date of the Institution, or the time of delivering them will be the question."
"Some ceremony on disposing of them may no doubt be thought necessary, but I am persuaded ... that in this business our conduct should appear free from ostentation.... Cincinnatus knew nothing of state chairs, etc. etc. his heart & his actions corresponded in virtuous exertions alone [W]hy then should we deprive our funds of one shilling more than what is absoluteliy necessary in the frugal managem.t of our charitable institution."
Presented in honor of Jonathan Clark
