Note
Concerns Van Cortlandt's desire to become a member of the New York State Society of the Cincinnati.
"I received your letter of the 25th requesting to be considered as a candidate for admission into the Society of the Cincinnati, under the idea ... that your highly respected father [lieutenant-governor Pierre Van Cortlandt] was a member thereof under some supposed bye-laws."
"I do not recollect ever I have heard, nor does there remain any record to my knowledge, now in texistence that Lt. Governor Cortlandt ever was an honorary member. He never has attended since the year 1801. Since which period I have been absent ... on the Anniversary Day."
"Stephen Van Rensselaer became an honorary member many years ago [1791], as the representative of a distinguished & meritorious family ...."
At the time of this letter, Varick was the president of the New York State Society of the Cincinnati.
Although Pierre Jr.'s petition was unsuccessful at the time, he did succeed as an hereditary member in 1832 after his brother Philip died in 1831.
