These toasts offered on Washington’s birthday reflect the political divisions in the country over the War of 1812.
Following his toast to Washington’s memory, he also offered: "2d. The memory of Alexander Hamilton. – It was sufficient that he was the bosom friend & disciple of Washington to be designated a victim to appease the demon of democracy ... 4th. The Minority in Congress, a constellation of patriots – when they sound the tocsin the people will take the alarm & be at their posts ... 6th. The war-hawks & vultures at Washington – Having usurped the place of the towering Eagle – may they be expelled from the Capitol with their wings cliped & a label about their necks to the wiles of Kentucky, the native haunts of birds of prey ..."
Read was a Federalist and former congressman; retired to Belfast, Maine district in Massachusetts.
