Shoemaker's name appears as an ensign in the 2nd sub legion in the Roster of Officers in the Legion of the United States, established to protect against the Indians in the Northwest Territory -- see the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, vol. 16, p. 426
Ft. St. Clair, established in 1791 and named for Arthur St. Clair, is located at the head of the Maumee River in Ohio. After St. Clair's defeat there, Anthony Wayne built Fort Wayne in Indiana after his victory at Fallen Timbers. The fort was abandoned in 1796 after the Treaty of Greenville ended the war with the Indians in the Northwest Territory.
